"I want to see a ring of friends surrounding the Union and its closest European neighbours, from Marocco to Russia and the Black Sea" - Romano Prodi , 5 december 2002
Now when the most of geografical Europe is included in EU could these wish of Prodi come true ?:)

When I think about European Union a lot of questions
appear im my mind.Terms as "demos", "popoli",
"society" are considered very often. But could 27
countries become one society? If yes-how, if no- why
?!? These are 27 different nations, 27 different
identities.
National identity is connected with name, origin,
history, religion, place. So it is not easy to mix all
of these factors, more over to make them common.
For example,on the first lecture of the course
"Sociology of Europe" I was really suprised, honestly.
When we were asked - do we feel europeans, most of the
italians were quiet. As I know Italy is one of the
contries which invent EU,60 years later italians have
a big doubt if they fell europeans or not. Heh, what
should I say as a bulgarian, enter EU 5 months ago :)
Maybe some italian should answer me here :)
So, I think that this is one of the gaps in the policy
of EU-there is not common European society, there is no
common EU pass!
Well, yes, the globalization is fact .But if it was
firstly economic and political, now it is more than
this-it is cultural, something which is fundamental.
All of the nations have a great history and culture
but unfortunately I can not imagine french, english,
german or even italian, spanish or greek to compare
themselves with bulgarians or romanians. Not only
european citizens (no matter what it means) but PEOPLE
must talk to each other and to understand that all of
us has given something to Europe.
Way you think that there are people who don't understand that?
I think that we are talking enough and that like erasmus student we have a chance to talk even more abaut everyting which we have to say and we could ask and surch information about everyting. I don't think that we have problem with talking to each other.
hmm...
Well, va bene ! Maybe it is right that we have opportunities to talk about european issues and to share our opinions and experience. But where is the benefit of all this ? So probably we must do something more than talking and this is much more difficult. If we made the first step( to talk and to realise what is exactly the problem) lets do the second one ...and hopefully reach the goal some day !

Il fatto in sé è un buon esempio, ma c'è di più: qual è l'argomento su cui ci si è, diciamo, divisi, qual è il cleavage intorno al quale si è innescata una polemica del 'noi siamo' 'non non siamo'? Davide Calenda
European citizen
Ti senti europeo - è veramente una difficile domanda...
As in the other comments mentioned it is difficult for the normal european citizen to feel proud of beeing a member of the European Union when the national government tries to hide every unpopular political action and all their domestic problems behind the scapegoat "EU". I think the EU has to invent some kind of PR and Marketing for itself in its memberstates, to stress the things we ve got in common. It is time to leave the road of living as a national state for good, the EU has to inform its citizens from their thirst school day on about its goals and its intentions, so we could create the first generation of real "EU-europeans".
To sum up my opinion: The EU has to inforce their "marketing" adressed to its citizens to become more popular and understood.
Personally I can say: Iam feeling european and the idea of the European Union with all its different goals meets my approval but I think we need an european constitution to develop this project.
Pierre Trudeau
Canada is a composed of several nationalites and has historical backgrounds which are not easy to match and bring into a single cultural framework: the nation. Pierre Trudeau, prime minister form 1968 to 1979 made a great effort to bring the idea of multinationalism ias a basis of a new 'national-building process' into the Canadian society. To do this, he evoked the universal human rights as the basis of the new constitutional process of Canada. Can we learn something from this lesson? Davide Calenda
European Identity
Do you fell European? This is maybe one of the most established questions nowdays.
Firstly it is important to understand what exactly means Eupore-in all aspects-ecomony, politicy, culture, history, geography. Then what means the term "identity". After all we can try to think ...am I European or not and why.
It won't be easy and I am sure that the answers will be many and different but this is the way to reach the truth. So let's share our opinion and points of views as EU citizens from all around the Eupore -East , West, Central and try to make this issue much more clear :)

The "European Question"
European or not - the only thing that is fact and that we can't change is, that geographical seen we ARE european! But how already mentioned, this is not the only point how the European Union should be seen.
So if we look at all the other points (like politic, economy, culture,...), the question "if somebody feels european" can just be answered by an indivitual way. For several people (who are geographical seen as europeans) it's important that they are able to identify themselves with all factors of the other european memberstates. Otherwise they don't see themselves as a part of the European Union, so they would negate the answer if they feel european. But the more countries join the EU, the more differences will appear.
Just seen from a cultural point of view, I would say that it is more a profit than a disadvantage, that people with different cultures are "united". When they work together, they will "learn" how to deal with each other and maybe that will reduce the prejudices between different countries and cultures.
In the end, a single citizen is not able to dicide which country "fits" to the European Union and which doesn't, but at least the goal of the European Union is to combine all it's memberstates - what requires again the contentedness of each individual.
European identity
I think that we miss some very important point. It is one think when you are speaking for european and it is another think when you are speaking for european citizen. To feel yourself european don't meam that you hve to feel yourself also european citizen. Yes, it is possible to have these two identity at one person but it's also possible not to have them.
I think that when we talk about "european identity" we have to make clear what exactly we are doing to understand. The EU is traing to create one commen identity which to be for all memberstates but this is something different from the european identuty based on the common history of thy european continent, on the interactions which are making all the country in Europe to become as one, one sherd knowledge and sherd way of thimking. Yes, there are diferences between the different countries but there are also a lot of common thinks which, according to me, are making as to feel like europeans even if we are not feel like european citizan or even if we are not part of EU.

I feel European
If we think feeling european means feeling EU-citizen there is a couple of points, which cause problems.
Firstly, people are used to blaim EU for all the domestic problems. One good example is presidental elections of France; every candidate is trying to collect votes for example by mocking euro and EU in general. And the voters are buying it. This isn´t a good way to promote union and causes doubt towards EU among people.
Secondly, the ordinary people, majority of EU-citizens, aren´t aware about how things work at EU-level. They are not interested because it seems to be all about bureuchracy and far away in Brussels. EU is all about stupid directives and high salaries for civilservants. People don´t see the good what comes with EU, and my opinion is that Union does a bad job promoting it, in a language that citizens would understand.
Despite these negative aspects, I personally feel European. I come from a little (not geographicly) scandinavian country with no more than 5million inhabitants so we have a strong national identity, but still I feel something incommon with other european students here. We have almost the same education (getting more similar with help of EU), ideas about life etc...In other words, I feel home when I´m in Europe.
"Join the circus, see the world"
I, also, feel european
That's a fact, people from Hungary, Spain, Sweden or Italy have a common history, the Europe isn't born in 47. By traveling through Europe, the similitudes with youth from all countries are too obvious to deny this.
And even if some relations between various countries are sometimes difficult, the global situation today (i'm thinking to the political influences) needs a strong EU that can express its will of democracy, humans rights, justice (The International Criminal Court and the various tribunals).
I have a strong agreement with these values defended by the European Union and particularly according to the cultural diversity.
Because if the EU is born around an economical project, as we said the first day, today its goals are (maybe not mainly, but at least also) socials and culturals.
Maria speaks about the french elections and the candidates who are denigrating the EU. That's true, but it's a national election and it's (sad but) very common to blame EU for all the problems, it's just easy. I totally agree that's weak, and a syndrome of how low is fallen the political life, but it doesn't mean people don't believe in EU anymore, including the politicians (in a more general way, what politicians can say in an election time is seldom meanful).
But an essential thing she said is that if some european citizens are that negatives with the EU, it is, for a large part, due to the incomprehension of the operation of the EU. Be there, today, in a sort of limbo after the reject of the constitutional treaty because of a lack of information, what a waste of time !
And of course i agree with Martina, the cultural differences between european countries have to be seen as opportunities, more especially since EU is protecting this cultural diversity and promoting universal values (so shared from all).
Today with Erasmus, after, working or traveling in Europe, well i don't think i'm going not to feel european soon.
I feel European
It´s very easy among ordinary people to blaim EU for the domestic problems of a certain country, and politicians are quite comfortable in that position. People feel that all the decision making happens in Brussels. It´s partly true, but also, we have to see that we have a possibility to effect what comes out of EU. Since we´re in, we should make all the effort to make it better, and not concentrate on accusing EU of all our problems. EU is a great opportunity to make public good on which also individuals can benefit.
I don´t know much about othes countries EU-atmosphere, but in Finland, I think, the problem is that people don´t know enough, so it´s easy to criticise. For exsample; what decisions union Can make and how the decision process goes on. Of course, most of the people don´t want to know all these "details" so, the challenge is to get the message through using everyday language instead of bureaucratic lawyargon most of the citizens don´t understand.
The point is: people not-knowing causes doubts about EU and therefore people are reluctant to consider themselves as eu-citizens.
But what comes to feeling "European" is a little bit different. When I go out of Europe, it´s easier to tell people that I´m european than saying I´m Finnish, because most of the people non-european(or some even in Europe!!) don´t know where (or what) Finland is. But that´s my opinion, and I come from a small country with population of little more than 5million. I quess for example British and Germans are more proud to say they´re either British or German than saying European. I don´t know.
Best regards (and waiting for a vivid conversation),
Maria Ojakoski
Cina vs EU
Davide Calenda
